The Netflix film division is being reorganized based on genre

Netflix's film division is being reorganized under new head Dan Lin.

Several sources report The Hollywood Reporter that the streaming service's features department will now be divided into genres – such as science fiction, romantic comedies and religious comedies. While Lin officially began his Netflix tenure on April 1, sources report that the reorganization has been in the works for over a month, with Lin consulting with Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria, the streamer's film executives and external partners.

Under the new structure, Ori Marmur will oversee action, fantasy, horror and science fiction titles, while Kira Goldberg will oversee thrillers, dramas and family films. Niija Kuykendall will handle faith, youth and holiday offerings, while Jason Young will handle comedies and romantic comedies.

There will also be some deviations as part of the restructuring. One source says the number will be around a dozen, but that number could change.

Netflix's film structure has long been a source of confusion in Hollywood. Internally, the difficulty for the group was sheer volume, as the number of projects far exceeded that of any other studio. The streamer has long grappled with the question of how to handle Hollywood's biggest cast list and its biggest content spenders.

The film division, under former heads Lisa Nishimura and Tendo Nagenda, was split by budget, with mid-to-high budget projects landing under Nagenda, while Nishimura oversaw what the streamer saw as mid-to-low budget, as well as acquisitions and non-fiction offerings.

After the departures of Nagenda (in September 2022) and Nishimura (in March 2023), the film department was led by Goldberg, Marmur and Kuykendall. (Previously, these executives were pushed into the various budget areas that were not within Nagenda and Nishimura's respective domains.) At the time, the reorganization under Goldberg, Marmur, and Kuykendall was touted as an attempt to curb confusion and streamline all filmmaking efforts.

Reorganizing a department is a common Hollywood practice involving the appointment of a new boss. The recent reorganization was the result of the desire to better adapt the internal structure to the needs of the Netflix film lineup. According to insiders, Netflix's Lin-era slate of films will mostly consist of mid-range offerings, with the streamer having scored its biggest hits with comedies, romantic comedies and family films. Scattered around there will be a handful of big films and the requisite awards contenders.
