Beehive Bash, a showcase exclusively for women's sports in Utah, will take place April 13

The Beehive Bash takes place this weekend.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Running back Gina Magana (26) leads the Falconz as they take the field for playoff action between the San Diego Rebellion and the Utah Falconz on Thursday, June 8, 2023.

For the first time in Utah, a day will be dedicated solely to showcasing the Beehive State's women's sports programs.

Six teams will meet at Highland High School on Saturday, playing three different sports to highlight the diverse programs offered in Utah for women and non-binary people. The teams play rugby, ultimate frisbee and soccer.

The Salt City Slugs, Boulder Babes and Utah Vipers are local rugby teams that compete in Divisions 1 and 2 of USA Club Women's Rugby. Members of the Provo Peaks rugby team also play, as do members of BYU's extramural squad.

The Utah Wild will perform ultimate Frisbee while the Utah Falconz will play football.

“These athletes and these sports are often overlooked,” Falconz captain and starting safety Kim Krinke said in a statement. “But we continue to find that when people are exposed to our teams, they fall in love with us, with what we do and, most importantly, with what happens on the field.”

The event is another attempt to convince Salt Lake City officials to convert the stadium site currently used by the Salt Lake Bees into a sports complex exclusively for professional and semi-professional women's sports in Utah. A proposal called “She Plays Here” was one of three winners in a design competition last year.

Tickets for the event are $20 when purchased through the Utah Falconz or Utah Wild websites. They cost $25 at the gate. Falconz and Wild season ticket holders and children under 12 have free entry.

“We are stronger together,” said Utah Wild captain Kendra Miller. “And that’s saying something because, to be honest, we’re pretty strong individually too. These teams are made up of players who have had to fight hard to play at the highest level of their sport in this state. It will be inspiring to see everyone playing on the same field.”
