Calipari says goodbye to Kentucky | in social media video The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette

FAYETTEVILLE – John Calipari, who senior sources confirmed has agreed to become the University of Arkansas men's basketball coach, said goodbye to Kentucky and its fans Tuesday in a video posted to social media.

Calipari had a 410-122 record in 15 seasons as Kentucky coach, including winning the 2012 national championship along with four Final Four appearances.

Calipari is expected to be announced as the Razorbacks' coach this week, possibly on Wednesday, after the Arkansas Board of Trustees meets Wednesday morning to approve his contract.

“It was a wonderful time for us,” Calipari said in a video while sitting on a couch at his home in Lexington, Kentucky. “This is a dream job.” It was my dream job.

“Everyone in our profession looks at the University of Kentucky in basketball and says, 'That's the bluest of the blue.'

“Over the last few weeks it has become clear to us that the program probably needs to hear a different voice. That the university as a whole needs to have another voice to guide and listen to this program. And the fans need to hear a different voice.

“We really enjoyed it here, but we think it's time for us to retire. And get out of the program entirely.”

Calipari, who wore a blue top in the video, did not mention Arkansas by name but did mention that he was leaving for a new job. At 65, he showed that he still enjoys working as a coach.

“We have been given opportunities and we discuss it as a family,” Calipari said. “I love coaching. I love coaching young people.

“This year’s team enjoyed coming in every day. You have strengthened me. I love chasing championships. I love bringing the children together. That's what I do. This is who I am.”

Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart issued a statement Tuesday thanking Calipari.

“We are grateful that John Calipari has led our program for the past 15 years, contributing to Kentucky’s legacy of championship success,” Barnhart said. “We are grateful to John for his many contributions to the university and our state, both on and off the field.

“We are working diligently to hire a proven, highly committed coach who recognizes the importance of this program to our fans and the state of Kentucky.”

Calipari thanked his Kentucky players and staff, as well as the fans for their support.

“It was a dream what we achieved,” said Calipari. “But 15 years, time for a different voice, and you know I will always be a fan. Thank you very much.”
