Grandmother survives Covington ATM shooting

A Washington grandmother is recovering after she was shot and robbed at a BECU ATM in Covington on Friday.

The victim's friends say she was depositing money at an ATM when two gunmen came up to her and shot her in the stomach and twice in the leg.

Her granddaughter was in the car uninjured, but saw her grandmother being attacked before a good Samaritan jumped in to help her.

“We can’t understand it, we can’t stop thinking about it,” Anna Peterson said. “I think it consumes us all because it happened to one of us.”

Peterson sits on the board of the Sea Hawkers Booster Club with the victim. She put together this GoFundMe to help the victim and his granddaughter.

“Sea Hawkers from all over the world have started donating, and we even have chapters in Ireland, for example, doing a fundraiser to donate,” Peterson said.

Elise Robinson, president of the Sea Hawkers Booster Club, describes the victim as a mentor and most recently visited her in the hospital last weekend.

“She looked like she was in a lot of pain,” Robinson said.

Robinson says while the victim prepares for physical therapy for her injuries, she is currently unemployed, so the money donated to the online fundraiser will help cover rent, utilities, food and the care of her granddaughter.

“She is a real gem for this community,” Robinson said. “She volunteers with the Boy Scouts, with us, at soccer camps, whatever. If we need anything, she’s there.”

On Tuesday evening, a spokesman for Harborview Medical Center said the victim was in satisfactory condition, and the King County Sheriff's Office said the suspects who shot her had not been caught.
