(LISTEN): Convicted Missouri double murderer executed in Bonne Terre

The Missouri Department of Corrections (DOC) says the execution of convicted Missouri murderer Brian Dorsey went smoothly Tuesday evening.

Dorsey was executed by lethal injection at the state's maximum security prison in Bonne Terre in southeast Missouri and was pronounced dead at 6:11 p.m., according to Missouri DOC spokeswoman Karen Pojmann:

“At 6 p.m., Governor Parson's office was asked if there was any reason why the lawful execution of Brian Dorsey for the murders of Sarah Bonnie and Ben Bonnie should not proceed. The answer was to continue. At 6:01 p.m. the order for lawful execution was given. At 6:01 p.m. the lethal injection of pentobarbital was administered. At 6:03 p.m., the five-minute timer was set. “At 6:11 p.m., Brian Dorsey was pronounced dead,” Pojmann said.

Missouri's governor rejected a plea for clemency for Dorsey, 52, pointing out that he killed his cousin Sarah Bonnie and her husband Ben Bonnie after they took him in in December 2006 when drug dealers were looking for Dorsey. The Bonnies were shot in the head with a shotgun execution, and Governor Parson says Dorsey raped Sarah's body after the murder. Governor Parson says Dorsey repaid the Bonnies with cruelty, inhumane violence and murder. Dorsey's supporters claim he was doing a lot of drugs at the time of the murders and was a model inmate and barber at the prison, even cutting the warden's hair.

Ms. Pojmann tells reporters that outside Boone Terre Prison there were 85 protesters who opposed the execution while 24 protesters supported it. Pojmann tells reporters that Brian Dorsey's last meal consisted of two double cheeseburgers with bacon, chicken strips, two large French fries and a pizza.
