Here's a recent AP story on the MLS:

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Lionel Messi returned to help Inter Miami salvage a draw.

Messi scored shortly after coming on as a substitute at the start of the second half and set up Leo Afonso's opener two minutes later. But Cole Bassett scored for the Colorado Rapids in the 88th minute and the game ended in a 2-2 draw on Saturday night.

It was Messi's first appearance for Inter Miami since he was forced off with a hamstring injury early in the second half in the CONCACAF Champions Cup game against Nashville on March 13. Since then he had missed four Inter Miami games and two games with Argentina.

He wasted no time in announcing his return on Saturday. Messi's fourth goal in as many MLS games this season came in the 58th minute when he beat Colorado keeper Zach Steffen with a low shot that hit the left goal post, then skidded back across the goalmouth before hitting just inside the goal in the next landed on the right post.

“The most important thing was that he was fine and comfortable,” Inter Miami coach Gerardo “Tata” Martino said of Messi. “It's sad to concede two goals, but we continue to make mistakes that cost us points. … It had to do with us not reading the game right, not reading the moment right, and that cost us.”

Shortly after play resumed, Messi sent a pass to David Ruiz, who found Afonso alone in front of him. Afonso scored his first MLS goal to give Inter Miami the lead.

It didn't last. Bassett caused problems late in regular time and Inter Miami (3-2-3) had to settle for just one point instead of three. Rafael Navarro scored the first goal for Colorado (2-2-3) by scoring a penalty late in the first half.

Two fans entered the pitch separately in the final minutes, presumably to take a selfie with Messi. Both were quickly escorted away by security and time expired shortly after the second fan entered the field.

It was a costly night for Inter Miami, which has been plagued by injuries – dating back to the team's seven-game trip around the world in preseason – and is now dealing with even more of them. The team was without seven players on Saturday, missing Leo Campana late in the first half due to an apparent hamstring injury and Afonso a few minutes after scoring in the second half.

Messi and his three former standout Barcelona teammates – Luis Suárez, Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba – were all available on Saturday, although none started. It's a clear sign that Inter Miami is trying to be cautious about the workload of its four oldest players, all of whom are 35 or older. Alba and Busquets came into play in the second half.

“We needed Busi to have fewer minutes,” Martino said.

Afonso was supposed to play the entire game, Martino added, but the injury changed that and plans were quickly changed out of necessity.

Inter Miami is in a phase where it will play five games in 15 days. The team drew 1-1 with New York City FC on March 30, lost the CONCACAF Champions Cup first leg 2-1 at home to Monterrey on Wednesday and hosted the Rapids on Saturday. They then head to Mexico next Wednesday for the second leg of the CONCACAF series before finishing in Kansas City on April 13th.

A game on Saturday would mean Messi could play in the second leg against Monterrey, Martino said.

Messi came out of the bench area in the 35th minute and began warming up behind one of the end lines. The mere sight of him sent fans into a frenzy.

They almost missed a Miami goal at the other end.

At the same time as the first sighting of Messi, Julian Gressel found some space and shot a 30-yard throw. The ball rolled just to the left, so the game remained goalless.

A few minutes later, that changed. Colorado's Kevin Cabral was knocked to the ground in the penalty area – just a few feet from where Messi was warming up – and Navarro beat Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender for the penalty kick for a 1-0 lead.
