One person was killed and five others, including two children, were injured in a shooting in Washington, D.C., on Wednesday evening, police said.

Police responded to a shooting in Northeast D.C.'s Carver Langston neighborhood around 6 p.m. and found several people with gunshot wounds, Metropolitan Police Chief Pamela A. Smith said at a news conference Wednesday.

Smith said a man was pronounced dead at the scene and a 9-year-old boy, a woman and two men were taken to local hospitals for treatment. The police chief added that a 12-year-old boy also arrived at a local hospital a short time later.

“Fortunately, none of them have life-threatening injuries,” Smith said.

Smith said police conducted a preliminary investigation and learned that two gunmen got out of a vehicle and began shooting at people who were outside in the neighborhood before fleeing.

Surveillance footage captured images of the car. Smith said the car was a gray or light blue four-door sedan that was heavily tinted. The car also had a paper license plate on the back, no gray tags on the front and a spare tire in the passenger seat, Smith said.

Smith said police will investigate and work to combat gun violence in the city and remove illegal guns from the streets. According to MPD data, as of April 10, there was a 31% decrease in attacks with dangerous weapons compared to the same period last year. All violent crimes have also decreased by 22% compared to the same period in 2023.

“What we are seeing is an increase in guns in the county and we are doing everything we can to make sure we remove these guns from our streets,” Smith said.

No motive has been released at this time and anyone with information is asked to contact D.C. investigators at 202-727-9099 or text 50411.

Police did not immediately respond to USA TODAY's request for an update on the investigation.
