Israel-Gaza live updates: Biden calls for G7 meeting after Iran's 'brazen' attack

The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem lifted its protective order for U.S. government employees early Sunday after the threat from Iranian drones and missiles “decreased.”

However, the embassy warned that security in Israel “remains complex” and can change quickly.

“The U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal security awareness as security incidents often occur without warning,” the embassy said in a security alert.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken condemned the Iranian attack on Israel and said the US was not seeking escalation but would support Israel's right to self-defense and protect US personnel in the Middle East.

“The United States strongly condemns Iran’s attack on Israel,” Blinken said in a statement.

He added that he would “consult allies and partners in the region and around the world in the coming hours and days.”

Two US officials confirmed that US forces shot down about 70 Iranian drones en route to Israel.

An official added that one of the US Navy destroyers in the eastern Mediterranean was also able to shoot down an unspecified number of Iranian ballistic missiles.

The Israel Defense Forces air defense system, together with Israel's strategic allies, successfully intercepted most of Iran's surface-to-surface missile launches using the Arrow air defense system before the launches reached Israeli territory.

A small number of hits were detected, including at an IDF base in southern Israel, where minor damage was caused to infrastructure.

In the last few hours, dozens of enemy aircraft and dozens of cruise missiles from Iran have been identified and intercepted approaching Israeli territory. Currently, dozens of IAF fighter jets are deployed to intercept any air threats approaching Israeli territory.

According to a situation analysis by the IDF Home Front Command, residents of the following cities: Northern Golan, Nevatim, Dimona, Eilat City, Be'er Sheva and Arad are no longer required to stay near a protected space.

The IDF said it is deployed on all fronts, is prepared and continues to defend Israeli territory.

White House sources say there is grave concern that an Iranian retaliation against Israel – and the possible Israeli response – will expand this war.

President Joe Biden cut short his weekend vacation to prepare with his national security team. They were on high alert and knew this attack was imminent.

U.S. officials say the military is ready to provide assistance in defending Israel against attack if needed.

The US is already deploying military assets to the region to deter Iran and help protect US forces. Officials said they had urged Iran against further escalation or attacks on U.S. forces. They have stressed that the US was not involved in the attack in Damascus, Syria, earlier this month.
