Chicago Shooting: 11 Shots in Back of the Yards Near Damen; 8-year-old girl killed; Two boys, ages 1 and 8, were injured, police said

CHICAGO (WLS) – A girl died and ten other people were injured in a shooting at a family gathering in the south of the city.

The shooting happened near 52nd Street and South Damen Avenue in the Back of the Yards neighborhood around 9:18 p.m., Chicago police said.

Officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert about 18 shots fired at the location, police said. They found several people shot and began to perform life-saving measures on the victims.

A witness said he saw a black sedan approaching the area and someone unknown began firing into the crowd before fleeing south on Damen Avenue, Chicago police said in a statement Sunday Update with.

Police said the shooting was likely a targeted act of violence.

According to police, the victims included seven adults and four children.

An 8-year-old girl was shot in the head and taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Here is the latest information on the surviving children, according to police:

– A one-year-old boy was shot in the stomach and is in critical condition.

– An 8-year-old boy was shot in the stomach and is in critical condition.

– A 9-year-old boy's hand was grazed by a bullet and is expected to be OK.

Among the adults, a 36-year-old man was shot in the arm and back and is in critical condition in the hospital.

Here's what we know about the injured adults who are in good condition:

-A 19-year-old woman was shot in the leg.

-A 26-year-old woman was shot in the thigh.

-A 30-year-old woman was shot in the forearm.

-A 36-year-old woman was shot in the back.

-A 38-year-old man was shot in the foot.

-A 40-year-old woman was shot in the right leg.

Police believe there are probably two shooters. Nobody is in custody.

Councilwoman Stephanie Coleman, who represents Chicago's 16th District, released the following statement Sunday morning:

The Back of the Yards community is united in our grief, our prayers, and our collective spirit that we must continue to stand firm against these senseless acts of physical violence.
Violence is a citywide problem that continues to mischaracterize the true essence and nature of our neighborhoods. This tragedy has left us all heartbroken and desperate. I am confident and confident that Superintendent Snelling and the Chicago Police Department will work tirelessly to apprehend the person or persons responsible for this cowardly crime.
I would like to express my deepest condolences to the family of this precious gem and offer my prayers to all those injured.
