At the United Nations, Israel calls for “all possible sanctions” against Iran

Iran-Israel LIVE: “The Security Council has failed in its duty to maintain peace and security.”

LIVE updates on the Iran-Israel conflict: Israel's UN envoy on Sunday called on the Security Council to impose “all possible sanctions” on Iran following the Islamic Republic's unprecedented attack on Israel.

“Today the Council must take action (and) condemn Iran for its terror,” Ambassador Gilad Erdan told the body, calling on countries to “impose all possible sanctions on Iran before it is too late.”

Iran's UN envoy told the Security Council on Sunday that the Islamic Republic was exercising its “inherent right to self-defense” in its unprecedented attack on Israel.

“The Security Council … has failed in its duty to maintain international peace and security,” Amir Saeid Iravani said after Israel's apparent attack on an Iranian consulate in Damascus earlier this month.

Therefore, Tehran has “no choice” but to respond, he said, adding that his country “does not seek escalation or war” but will respond to any “threat or aggression.”

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres reminded on Sunday that retaliation with the use of force after Iran's attack on Israel was prohibited under international law, while the United States warned the Security Council that it would work to hold Tehran accountable at the United Nations to pull

Guterres told member states at a UN Security Council meeting that the UN charter prohibits the use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of a state, while condemning Iran's attack on Israel and warning of further escalation.

Iran launched a swarm of explosive drones and fired missiles on Saturday in its first direct attack on Israeli territory, risking a major escalation.

Israel's defense minister speaks with his US counterpart

Israel's Defense Minister Yoav Gallant had a telephone conversation with his American counterpart, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, on Sunday.

This included Iran's firing of hundreds of different types of munitions, including 100 ballistic missiles, each carrying hundreds of kilograms of explosives.
