What is PAN, benefits, download ePAN and other related questions

People who have applied for a new PAN card or updated their existing PAN details can quickly download the e-PAN within 10 minutes. This service can be accessed through both NSDL and UTIITSL portals. For your convenience, let's briefly examine these processes. But first, let us understand the meaning of PAN and its role in financial transactions.

What is a PAN card and how is it useful?

A Permanent Account Number (PAN) is an identification document issued to Indian taxpayers by the Indian Income Tax Department (IT). It consists of a 10-digit alphanumeric code and is used to consolidate an individual's income tax-related transactions, including tax payments, TDS/TCS credits and other financial transactions.

PAN is crucial to the economic integrity of the country as it serves as proof of identity in financial transactions. By linking all financial transactions to a PAN, the government can monitor the flow of funds to combat tax evasion, black money and money laundering.

To expedite PAN applications, the government operates two popular portals: NSDL and UTIITSL. Applicants can apply for PAN online through these portals and get approval in less than a week. Once approved, applicants will receive their PAN number via SMS and email. This number allows applicants to quickly download their e-PAN while waiting for the physical PAN card to be delivered in the mail.
