The Space Mountain movie is moving forward at Disney with Cowboy Bebop Showrunners on Netflix

Disney's live-action film Space Mountain just received its first major update in years, as THR reports that Josh Appelbaum and André Nemec are on board as writers.

The duo is best known for the Netflix live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop and the Prime Video spy series Citadel. The last update we heard about the Space Mountain movie came in 2020, when it was announced that Obi-Wan Kenobi writer Joby Harold was on board to write the film. Harold remains producer.

“Space Mountain” is Disney's latest attempt to adapt one of its Disney park attractions into a feature film, based on the blockbuster series “Pirates of the Caribbean” as well as 2021's “Jungle Cruise” starring Emily Blunt and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson follows. The most recent adaptation of the ride came out last year with The Haunted Mansion, although that was one of several Disney films that struggled at the box office last year.

One of the first true rides in Disney parks, Space Mountain originally opened at Walt Disney Resort in 1975 before a second version was introduced at Disneyland, California in 1977. It remained one of the most popular Disneyland attractions for a long time and was built in several versions in parks in Tokyo, Paris and Hong Kong.

Hopefully this film will do better than Appelbaum and Nemec's Cowboy Bebop, which was canceled after one season after being widely reviled by fans. In addition to their TV appearances, the two have also appeared in films such as “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol” and the live-action “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” films from 2014 and 2016.
