OpenAI just released a new Sora video to promote TED Talks

OpenAI's latest Sora video is a whirlwind flight of innovation, conversation and red accents as the company uses its flagship video product to promote a new season of TED talks.

The movement is mildly nauseating and takes you on a roller coaster ride through research labs, factories and lecture halls before ending with a shot of someone giving a lecture on stage.

It is designed to promote the new season of TED Talks, which will focus on artificial intelligence by exploring what TED will cover in 40 years.

This is the latest Sora release from a professional video producer rather than the OpenAI team itself, and follows nature documentaries, music videos and short films about a man with a bubble head.

Currently, only a small group of OpenAI-approved artists and creators can do anything with Sora because it is a closed system. This is expected to change later this year as OpenAI looks to integrate Sora with ChatGPT and third-party tools like Adobe Premiere Pro.

The TED Talks were created with Sora by LA-based director Paul Trillo. He said that to get the final 1:33 clip, he had to create over 330 clips from text prompts and then edit them down.

The final video consisted of a total of 25 clips, all created by Sora. Everything except the TED logo was generated by Sora, so all movements and frames were generated by AI.

Trillo said, “It was really fun to try out techniques I've used in the past with this new tool. It unlocks a lot of new ideas.”

This is an opinion expressed by many of the creatives who were given access to Sora early on, suggesting that it could lead to entirely new ways to tell stories with images.

What can we see in the new video?

The video begins with what looks like an explosion. The camera quickly zooms in on the explosion and this is the beginning of a “through the looking glass”-like journey of discovery.

You then fly over several cities and enter different types of buildings. First you see someone donating at Alk, and the zoom continues into factories, experiments and more.

Every few scenes we see another person giving a talk in front of a red background, probably meant to simulate a TED talk, before more shots of experiments and research are shot.

It's a compelling and well-made video with music by Jacques. It gives a solid indication of what is possible with generative AI video when placed in the hands of artists and, in my opinion, supports the idea that it does not replace creatives but ushers in a new era of creativity.
