Here's how to style micro shorts elegantly.

Last year, hemlines skyrocketed as the micro-mini skirt made a resurgence and some people ditched pants for tights. Now it seems that another super short style has taken the top spot when it comes to stylish transpersonal clothing: Booty shorts (known in the fashion world as micro shorts) capitalize on the Y2K revival that has taken over the fashion scene.

Why are booty shorts having such a big moment?

Straight from the spring 2024 runways, the return of the micro shorts is no surprise. Shows from Chanel to Chloé have featured classic black booty shorts, while Tom Ford and Gucci showcased the trend in fun fabrics like leather and denim. Nevertheless, the style has been in keeping with the fashion zeitgeist for decades.

“Short shorts originated in the 1930s when women wore them as swimwear,” explains stylist Ashley Galang Rico. “In the 1960s, when demand for denim was high, people started making their jeans shorter and turning them into raw-hem cutoffs.”

In the 1970s, television became a hit Dukes of Hazzard shot the short shorts into the spotlight. “Cutoffs became more common, with an even shorter style called Daisy Dukes, named after Catherine Bach's character in the television series.” The Daisy Dukes style evolved into hot pants – tight-fitting short shorts made from various fabrics such as velor, corduroy and leather.

Now they're back in a new way. Galang Rico shares similar ideals of the no pants trend, saying that booty shorts are an easier way to forgo pants and still stand out. “The micro shorts or no pants trend is not just a statement, but a trend that challenges notions of modesty in clothing and pushes us to embrace our bodies.”

How to wear booty shorts this year

“Both women and men can wear the micro short trend without feeling out of place when styled with the right pieces,” notes Galang Rico. The thigh-length style has been spotted on celebs like Zendaya, SZA and Kristen Stewart, giving us plenty of outfit inspiration for the warmer days ahead.

Galang Rico recommends combining the daring shorts with simple basics like a white shirt or a knitted sweater. For outerwear, a long coat or oversized blazer will help offset the revealing nature of the shorts and transform the look from gym class to street chic. This outfit formula pairs well with sheer black stockings or over-the-knee socks to balance the proportions.

“To complete the look, my preferred footwear would be either pumps or…” [a pair of] Combat boots,” she shares. Are you afraid of showing so much leg? Pair your mini shorts with thigh-high leather boots for a rugged yet sexy look. Remember: the shorter the better.

The booty shorts trend isn't just for one body type. “The fabrics made for microshorts should have stretch to be more form-fitting and forgiving, especially for curvier women, such as knits and spandex,” says Galang Rico. The shorts silhouette is particularly attractive in its dolphin cut, which offers our thighs endless space to breathe.
