“Ice Cup” Degraffenreidt is committed to Rutgers football

The ice cream sundae is ready to crush.

That's because Atlantic City native Sah'Nye “Ice Cup” Degraffenreidt announced that he has committed to attend and play football at Rutgers University. He made the announcement on his social media X account on Friday, saying he was “1,000% committed.”

With Degraffenreidt, Rutgers gains one of the top recruits from South Jersey. The Scarlet Knights, who went 7-6 in the Pinstripe Bowl including a 31-24 victory over Miami, will host their annual spring game on Saturday.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound junior is a standout pass catcher for the Vikings and recorded 1,009 receiving yards and 14 touchdowns last season, both school records in a single season, according to South Jersey football historian Chuck Langerman.

A two-time All-South Jersey selection, Degraffenreidt has 95 catches for 1,903 yards and 25 touchdowns in his career. He also scored six touchdowns on special teams, along with two pick-6s and a rushing TD.

As a sophomore, Degraffenreidt helped lead Atlantic City to its first playoff win since 2012, catching 51 passes for 894 yards and 11 touchdowns. He totaled 16 points in 10 games as the Vikings went 7-3.

His most famous catch — a one-handed grab against Holy Spirit on Thanksgiving — earned him a spot on Sportscenter's Top 10.

Degraffenreidt got his nickname as a child when he showed up late to a youth soccer game. When he finally reached the sideline, he was carrying ice cream in one hand.

Now Degraffenreidt will try to give opposing defenses in the Big 10 the rest they need. He chose to stay home and play college football in the Garden State rather than have other conference opponents such as Michigan and Penn State, both of which made offers to the receiver.
