Mathis ISD school board fires AD/head football coach Roger Masters

The Mathis ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to terminate the contract of head football coach and athletic director Roger Masters at a special meeting Friday.

In a letter posted on its website, the district says Masters submitted a letter of resignation on April 24 effective at the end of the school year, but the board decided to take action based on the information presented to the board.

The Mathis ISD board was presented with documents April 16 from Superintendent Tim Norman about “improper electronic communications between Coach Masters and a former student” that occurred during a previous school year.

Norman had not previously shared the information with the school board and the district decided to place Masters and the superintendent on paid administrative leave on April 22. Veronica Gutierrez currently serves as acting superintendent for the district.

April 26 was the first day the Mathis ISD school board could take action based on Texas Open Meetings Act rules.

Masters held the position for less than a full year, having been officially appointed to his position in August 2023.

The press release states that an outside law firm is conducting an investigation to uncover everything that occurred leading up to the discovery of the improper communications, and that the investigation into the actions will continue even after Masters' employment is terminated.
