Wrexham stars welcome Vegas trip after 'playing through every game in pain' in promotion race

Wrexham ended the League Two season with a 2-1 win over league champions Stockport County after winning back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club's history

Wrexham celebrated with a trip to Las Vegas last summer

Las Vegas, here they come. Wrexham's Andy Cannon and Max Cleworth are eyeing their upcoming party in Sin City after “painfully playing through every game” to get promoted with the Hollywood-owned club.

Wrexham secured back-to-back promotions for the first time in the club's 160-year history, finishing second behind Stockport County to secure a place in League One for next season.

The season was as triumphant as it was tumultuous, a hallmark of the club since its takeover by Hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney three years ago. A rocky return to the English Football League after a 15-year absence quickly gave way to brilliant form from Phil Parkinson's side. A stubborn last-16 finish finally secured another automatic promotion place after a stunning win over Forest Green Rovers with two games to go.

Another all-expenses paid Las Vegas extravaganza is planned to celebrate the team's post-season successes with Saturday's 2-1 victory over Stockport County at Stok Racecourse. And this time, esteemed defender Max Cleworth will be old enough to enjoy the full extent of what the city has to offer, after being too young last year (the legal drinking age in the US is 21).

“Hopefully I'll just enjoy it a bit more than last year,” said the now 21-year-old after Saturday's 2-1 win over Stockport County in the final game of the season. “I will be allowed to enter a few more places. I’ll enjoy it more, but also to be treated to something like this by the owners is incredible and to do it with the group of guys we have is really special.”

The group spirit that runs through the Wrexham squad is an asset that Cannon believes helped them not only secure back-to-back promotions but also finish the season with a five-game winning streak.

“We're going to Vegas again, I hope to have a good time with everyone, but personally I don't want to end the season now,” said Cannon, who scored the winning goal against the Hatters three minutes before the end of regulation time in his He managed two games in his last two appearances for Wrexham. “Because I kept adding goals to my game and enjoyed every second of it, but at the same time I think everyone also needed a well-deserved break.

“The boys are in pain every game, and that goes for me too. I was obviously in pain every game. It's very hard and of course people from the outside don't know how it works, but we go to every game and I'm not sure everyone is always at 100%. But that's exactly what we have. We have a good mentality in the players and players who are ready to just go out there and do their best.”
