Former PHN football star Braiden McGregor signs with the New York Jets

Even though his name wasn't called in the 2024 NFL Draft, Braiden McGregor will still get a chance to prove he belongs in professional football.

The former Port Huron Northern defensive end signed with the New York Jets as an undrafted free agent on Saturday night. according to a report from ESPN's Jeremy Fowler.

McGregor, a Port Huron native, spent the last three years on the University of Michigan football team.

As a senior in 2023, he started all 15 games for the Wolverines and received All-Big Ten Conference honorable mention. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound pass rusher finished the game with 26 tackles (13 solo), 4.5 sacks, three pass deflections and a forced fumble. Two of his sacks came in the Rose Bowl victory over Alabama on January 1st.

McGregor is a 2020 graduate of Northern High School, where he was a member of the football team from 2016 to 2019.

“Learning that Braiden has signed with the Jets was great and I am thrilled for him and his family,” Northern coach Larry Roelens told the Times Herald in a text message. “I and the staff at Northern are extremely excited and proud of Braiden and his accomplishments at the U of M. I know his character and abilities will take him far in his future endeavors.”

According to Pro Football Reference, Northern, which opened in 1965, has never had a former player appear in an NFL game. Their archrival, Port Huron High School, which dates back to 1868, boasts the city's only prep athlete to accomplish the feat: Leo Draveling, who played nine games for the Cincinnati Reds during the 1933 NFL season.

McGregor will look to go down in the history books with him.
