Here's a recent NHL Playoffs AP story:

WASHINGTON (AP) — Nothing seems capable of knocking the New York Rangers off their game, let alone giving up an unforeseen jump shot five minutes into the game or incurring seven penalties.

Again, they responded to everything the Washington Capitals threw at them, and now they're just one win away from the second round.

Vincent Trocheck scored a power-play goal and an assist while shorthanded, Igor Shesterkin made 27 saves and the Rangers defeated the Capitals 3-1 in Game 3 on Friday night to take a 3-0 lead in the first best-of-seven game. round series. They can advance with a win in Game 4 on Sunday night.

“We’re playing really well,” Shesterkin said. “But we still have one more game to win and we’re focused on the next one.”

The Rangers scored goals at even strength 5-on-5, over 5-on-4 and under-4 in a special teams showcase of the Presidents' Trophy winners, who led the NHL regular season due in part to their strong power play at 5. Trocheck assisted Barclay Goodrow shorthanded and scored on the power play, while Chris Kreider controlled the puck for his franchise-best 42nd career playoff goal.

At the other end of the rink, Shesterkin looked like the 2022 Vezina Trophy winner, passing Max Pacioretty alone at the top with a stop on the right side and fending off Alex Ovechkin, who remains without a point this postseason. Shesterkin was perfect after allowing John Carlson to score with a fluttering shot off Mika Zibandjad's stick after just over five minutes.

“Shesty was obviously spectacular again,” Trocheck said. “He is a spectacular goalkeeper. We need him to be the backbone of this team. He’s been doing this for years.”

A big reason the Rangers pushed the Capitals to the brink of elimination is that they trailed for just 34 seconds in that game until Kreider scored the equalizer. Goodrow's goal gave them the lead exactly two minutes later, and they led the rest of the way through some choppy play and a handful of penalties on both sides.

After what they did at home at Madison Square Garden on Tuesday night, the Rangers scored shorthanded goals in consecutive playoff games for the first time since April 1990.

“I actually thought there could have been a few more,” coach Peter Laviolette said. “We were fortunate to be able to take advantage of that.”

Washington, trying to play 5-on-5 as much as possible to better balance a series that New York was able to dominate, once again failed to do so. Almost a third of the game (18:31) was special teams, which benefited the Rangers.

It also made life difficult for goalkeeper Charlie Lindgren, who despite making some crucial saves, allowed three goals on 22 shots. Lindgren, who carried the Capitals into the playoffs by shouldering the load down the stretch, was unable to find the rhythm, produce the same heroics and turn it into a series.

“In the series so far, they've come up with the big moments, whether this is the answer, whether this is the next moment, things like that,” said Washington defenseman John Carlson, who played a game-high 30 minutes of change. “It’s disappointing.”

Injuries didn't help the Caps, who were once again without two of their top four defensemen: Nick Jensen and Rasmus Sandin. They lost another midway through the first period when Trevor van Riemsdyk was hit high up by Rangers rookie Matt Rempe, who faces another disciplinary hearing six weeks after he was banned for four games for an illegal check to the head in March could threaten.

“That was a dirty hit,” Capitals center Nic Dowd said. “I think a player took advantage of another player in a vulnerable spot. They obviously hope Riems is okay.”
