After deadly tornadoes in Oklahoma, severe storms rage across the Gulf Coast: Live updates

'Simply devastating': Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt speaks after tornadoes hit state

The storm system that spawned deadly tornadoes in Oklahoma moved across the Gulf Coast on Monday.

According to the National Weather Service, Houston, Texas and the surrounding region are experiencing “significant and life-threatening impacts” of heavy rain. Several school districts were closed during the day due to the storm, local news outlet KHOU reported.

Storms will continue to move offshore until Monday evening.

Over the weekend, this storm system produced tornadoes that ripped through Oklahoma, killing four people, including a toddler.

The 4-month-old baby was found dead in Hughes County, Oklahoma, Emergency Management Director Mike Dockrey said in a statement The Independent. According to the Oklahoma Department of Emergency Management, responders also identified a second death in Holdenville, as well as deaths in the cities of Marietta and Sulfur.

Meanwhile, hospitals across the state are reporting 100 injuries from the tornadoes that touched down Saturday evening. Twenty of the injured were at a Sulfur sports bar when the tornado struck, Oklahoma Gov. Kevin Stitt said Sunday.

Mr. Stitt said the tornado damage in Sulfur was the worst he had seen since he took office, noting that many downtown businesses were destroyed.

Brothers survive rescue from a tornado in Nebraska

Brothers Roger Slatten and Royce Slatten were sucked from their home in Elkhorn, Nebraska, by a tornado on Friday evening, they told CNN.

“The moment before we left, we were both trying to go down the stairs,” Roger told CNN. “We kind of looked at each other and for a long time I was sure that was the last time I would ever see my brother – all I could hear was the windows slamming and everyone exploding.

Both brothers are injured but survived the encounter.

“The ground shook a few times under our feet and then we just took off,” Roger continued. “I hit the car head over heels several times, hitting my head on everything I could, slamming my face into the ground and being injured and buried in the rubble.”
