Biden and Speaker Johnson stand together in their demands against the arrest warrant against Netanyahu | Colorado in DC

The White House and House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) have spoken out against reports that the International Criminal Court is considering issuing arrest warrants for senior Israeli officials, a rare moment of unity between the two sides.

Johnson called on President Joe Biden to force the ICC to back down from alleged plans to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, urging the president to “use every means available to prevent such abomination.” The statement came after weeks of concern from Israeli officials that such arrest warrants were imminent for Netanyahu, as well as Defense Minister Yoav Gallant and Israel Defense Forces Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi.

“Such lawless action by the ICC would directly undermine U.S. national security interests,” Johnson said in a statement on Monday. “If left unchallenged by the Biden administration, the ICC could gain and assume unprecedented power to issue arrest warrants against American political leaders, American diplomats and American military personnel, endangering our country’s sovereign authority.”

The Biden administration has also opposed any plans to arrest Israeli leaders. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated during Monday's White House press briefing that the Biden administration is not convinced that the ICC has the authority to issue arrest warrants and does support the ICC investigation not.

It is not entirely clear whether the ICC intends to issue arrest warrants, although the organization has faced pressure from several member states not to do so.

The rare moment of solidarity comes as Biden and Johnson recently joined forces in support of Israel and Congress passed a $26.38 billion relief package earlier this month that includes funding to replenish the Iron Dome and David's Sling and $3.5 billion to advance the security of advanced weapons systems and other defense services.

The package received overwhelming support in both the House and Senate and was signed by Biden last week.
