How to disable HDR video playback on Instagram | Technical news

Have you been blinded by the sudden increase in brightness when opening Instagram on your phone? Because Instagram is now able to play videos in HDR mode, which automatically increases the brightness.

While the HDR format makes a scene appear much brighter and more vibrant, the sudden increase in screen brightness can sometimes damage the eyes, especially at night.

If you use an Android smartphone, there is no way to disable HDR playback on Instagram, at least currently. However, the function can be disabled on iPhones.

Apple iPhone 12 and newer models support HDR video playback on Instagram. These devices can also record HDR videos in Dolby Vision format and upload them to Instagram. All iPhones with OLED screens are capable of playing HDR videos on Instagram.

If HDR video autoplay bothers you, you can disable it as follows:

To disable HDR video playback on Instagram, go to your profile on Instagram > Click on the hamburger menu in the top right > Your app and media > Media Quality > and enable the “Disable HDR video playback” option.

Once activated, Instagram will automatically play HDR videos in SDR format.
However, this does not apply to HDR photos. HDR photos are initially displayed with full dynamic range and higher brightness.
