Tigers in touch with coveted Wake Forest cornerback DaShawn Jones

Brian Kelly and the LSU football team continue to face a busy time in the NCAA transfer portal as evaluations continue.

The Bayou Bengals have signed several free agents this offseason to fill the void at the defensive tackle position, but there is a new position group LSU has its sights on: cornerback.

After hosting the No. 1 and No. 2 defensive tackles in the transfer portal, LSU has turned to Wake Forest cornerback DaShawn Jones, a source confirms to LSU Country. On3 first reported that LSU was in contact with the ACC stud.

As talks continue, the hope is that LSU can bring Jones to Baton Rouge for an official visit sooner rather than later. According to several media outlets, he will visit Alabama this weekend for an official visit.

Jones entered the portal on Tuesday and received interest from several SEC programs, including LSU, shortly after entering.

The Baltimore native became one of the top cornerbacks on the free-agent market when he put his name to it. Jones, who played at a high level for the Demon Deacons, is gaining experience in the secondary and has several years of eligibility remaining.

After playing in nine games as a redshirt sophomore in 2023, Jones recorded 37 tackles and led the team with three interceptions on the year. He also added a pair of pass breakups.

The impressive list of schools Jones can turn to includes Alabama, LSU, Michigan and Ole Miss, to name a few, as he begins his portal process.

As a very long cornerback, he fits the prototypical Corey Raymond candidate. We've seen Raymond push for corners that fit that physical mold in the past, and it's clear he sees something in Jones as he begins his search for the Wake Forest talent.

As it stands, LSU's cornerback room is solid, but lacks experience with true freshman PJ Woodland and sophomore Ashton Stamps running with the first team that concludes spring ball.

In addition to Woodland and Stamps, we also saw Javien Toviano, Jyaire Brown and JK Johnson in the team, with veteran Zy Alexander expected to be back in the rotation this summer as he recovers from a torn ACL he suffered last season. LSU Country sources report that Alexander is ahead of schedule and could return to practice early in the summer.

Now there's a clear target for Raymond and Co., who want to push for Wake Forest's DaShawn Jones but will have to battle against several formidable programs.
