Arrest in April shooting on Tunnel Boulevard

Chattanooga police have arrested 29-year-old Geonta Gaines in connection with the April 11 shooting in the 600 block of Tunnel Boulevard.

On April 11 at 1:23 p.m., Chattanooga Police responded to a man shot in the 600 block of Tunnel Boulevard. When officers arrived, they found the victim, a 31-year-old man, with serious injuries. Officers performed life-saving measures until emergency medical services arrived.

Chattanooga Fire and Hamilton County EMS responded to the scene. EMS transported him to a local hospital with serious injuries, but he was stabilized.

The CPD Homicide Unit responded to conduct the shooting investigation. The CPD Crime Scene Unit responded to investigate the scene.

The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was shopping in a supermarket with his wife and two-year-old child. While the victim was waiting in line to check out, the suspect pulled out a firearm and shot the victim. He then fired another shot toward the victim's wife and other customers.

During the investigation, Detective Wilkerson, along with other members of the Homicide Unit, was able to use several pieces of evidence to identify Geonta Gaines as a suspect.

Detective Wilkerson obtained warrants for attempted first degree murder (three counts), reckless endangerment and unlawful possession of a firearm.

CPD's fugitive unit immediately began searching for Gaines and was able to locate and arrest him on Wednesday. He was taken to the Hamilton County Jail and Detention Center.
