Janelle Monáe gets her next film role in a musical

Janelle Monáe has landed her next film role in an upcoming musical (via The Hollywood Reporter).

The currently untitled project from Michel Gondry and Pharrell Williams will be a coming-of-age film set in Virginia Beach in the summer of 1977. He was inspired by the neighborhood where Williams grew up.

Monáe will join an already impressive cast including Elvis actor Kelvin Harrison Jr., The Little Mermaid's Halle Bailey, The Holdovers star and Oscar winner Da'Vine Joy Randolph, Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider -Verses actors Brian Tyree Henry and Missy Elliott.

The film is written by Toy Story 4 author Martin Hynes and Tick, Tick… Boom! Executive producer Steven Levenson. Mimi Valdés and Gil Netter will produce the film alongside Williams.

Monáe recently starred in the slavery horror film Antebellum, the Prime Video series Homecoming and the sequel Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery. Her singing talent makes her a great fit for her upcoming musical role, and her fourth studio album (The Age of Pleasure) was nominated for Album of the Year at this year's Grammys.

The third part of the Knives Out series has now been confirmed. The as-yet-untitled film will once again be written and directed by Rian Johnson.

Daniel Craig (who plays lead detective Benoit Blanc) will return to his role and attempt to uncover the latest mystery he faces. No additional cast members for Knives Out 3 have been announced yet.

Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery is available to stream on Netflix. Knives Out is available now on 4K Ultra-HD, Blu-ray and DVD, as well as on Prime Video, iTunes and other digital platforms.
