How the Cavs overcame the largest Game 7 deficit in NBA history

Cleveland Cavaliers fans experienced every emotion on Sunday afternoon. Frustration, anger, disappointment, hope, excitement and joy were the feelings of the home crowd at Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse.

This is due to the double-digit deficit and the eventual comeback the Cavs made in their Game 7 win over the Orlando Magic.

The Magic climbed to an 18-point lead in the second quarter while the Cavs' offense and defense stagnated. Never in NBA history had a team overcome such a large deficit in Game 7. Until the Cavs did it on Sunday, according to StateMuse.

How exactly were the Cavs able to pull off this historic comeback?

JB Bickerstaff broke down what he saw from his team after the game.

“We continued to do it together,” Bickerstaff said. “We never doubted each other. I think we've seen on the street that we've allowed things to snowball and that wasn't our concern tonight. Tonight we figured it out together and I think we did a great job at it.”

As far as the performance on the pitch is concerned, it all came down to the good four minutes in the second quarter.

“I think that’s how we ended the second quarter. To be able to shorten the lead and reduce it to 10. That’s always a comfortable number that you can increase in 24 minutes if you play the way we can.”

“There were just a lot of different guys making plays that gave us hope. We believe this group can handle a lot.”

This win not only advances the Cavs to the next round of the playoffs, but it also shows the resilience of this group. The only way for a team to overcome such a large lead is to never give up, and that's exactly what Cleveland did.
