Summary

  • Google Play Books takes the material you design with a modern facelift for an improved user experience.
  • Material You's dynamic theme update replaces the default blue accent theme in the app's redesign.
  • Expect Google Play Books to soon feature Material You's full dynamic theme, matching your device's wallpaper and aligning it with other Google apps.

Google's Material You, launched in 2021 as a successor to the company's iconic design theme, Material Design, is growing in popularity. This transition was marked by the introduction of new Android versions and the integration of personalized app themes, thanks to dynamic colors that match your wallpaper. Notably, Google Play Books, one of the newest Google services to support Material You, initially made a minor change by updating its icon. However, the app will now undergo a significant transformation with the introduction of Material You's full dynamic theme, aligning it with other apps and improving the user experience.

The hard work of the code detective AssembleDebug demonstrated the potential for dynamic theme design of Material You in Google Play Books. As shown in the screenshots below, this update ditches the default blue accent theme and gives the app a modern facelift. Additionally, it helps create a consistent interface across different Google apps, improving the user experience.

Google Play Books is getting a major overhaul with Material You design

The first Google Play Books steps toward adding a full Material You dynamic theme were discovered a few months ago when the app received a Material You redesign. Back then, the update brought a pill-shaped search bar, a new navigation bar, and rounded carousels on the Library tab. However, the app still lacked dynamic colors and stuck to the default blue accent. In 2022, Google Play Books also received an interactive Material You widget to lay the foundation for future revisions.

It remains to be seen when this update will be available in the stable Google Play Books app. However, since development appears to be complete, the wait shouldn't be too long. If you use Google Play Books, here's hoping the app gets a full Material You dynamic theme in the next few updates.

Google's push for Material You design is expected to continue with Android 15. As we previously reported, the operating system focuses on making Material You more attractive by providing color contrast settings. More related settings could land on Android 15 as the operating system rolls out to devices.
