Katy Perry goes viral for fake Met Gala photo that fooled her own mother

Katy Perry didn't make it to the Met Gala on Monday – contrary to what a viral deepfake suggested.

The “Roar” singer has been a longtime guest at New York City's annual fashion event and has been stepping out in stunning outfits for years. Perry was absent this time – only for photos of her on the red carpet to go viral and be revealed as creations of artificial intelligence.

While it remains unclear who made them, Perry's own mother was fooled by the images.

“I didn’t know you were going to the Met,” Mary Perry wrote to her daughter on Monday in a text message that the singer shared on Instagram for her 207 million followers. “What a beautiful dress, you look like the Rose Parade, you are your own float lol.”

Katy Perry, unable to keep her in the dark, replied: “Lol mom, the AI got you too, BEWARE!”

The dresses pictured online were undoubtedly in keeping with this year's dress code theme at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, dubbed “The Garden of Time” and inspired by JG Ballard's 1962 short story of the same name.

The AI photos showed Perry wearing a long dress decorated with flowers and shrubs and a metal corset with greenery cascading from her waist to form a skirt. However, eagle-eyed fans have now noticed that the images for this year's event used the fake red carpet as a backdrop.

Her followers also noted that Perry's post ended with a clip of her in a recording studio – and that her caption suggested: “Couldn't make it to the MET, had to work.”

“She works late… BECAUSE SHE'S A SINGER,” one enthusiastic follower wrote in the comments of Perry's post, with another posting: “WHERE IS THE ALBUM, RELEASE THE DAMN ALBUM.”

Perry announced her exit from “American Idol” after seven seasons as a judge in February and confirmed on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” that she will perform at a Brazilian music festival in the fall. The news came four years after her last album, Smile, hit stores.
