Police attack and arrest anti-Trump protester outside courthouse

Several police officers violently arrested an anti-Trump protester on Tuesday in a park outside the Lower Manhattan courthouse where Donald J. Trump is on trial.

The encounter occurred after protester Payne Daniel, 70, chanted into a microphone attached to a speaker hanging from a shoulder strap. Mr. Payne protested for several days at Collect Pond Park in front of the New York County Criminal Courthouse, but on Tuesday two officials told him that the speaker was banned.

One chased Mr. Daniel to the northern part of the park, threw Mr. Daniel to the stone floor along with another officer and tied his hands behind his back.

“Help,” called Mr. Daniel. “I’m being kidnapped!”

The New York Police Department did not immediately respond seeking comment. Throughout the trial, police told people using megaphones and loudspeakers that they were not allowed to leave the courthouse.

Mr. Daniel chanted outside last week and, after speaking into the microphone for two hours on Monday, said in an interview that his negative opinion of Mr. Trump began more than three decades ago during the trial of the Central Park Five.

The criminal case surrounding the sexual assault of a jogger in Central Park in 1989 shocked the city and the nation. Five black and Latino teenagers were wrongfully convicted, but the convictions were later overturned.

After the attack, Mr. Trump published newspaper ads calling on New York state to adopt the death penalty.

“Now look at who’s on trial,” Mr. Payne said on Monday. “That monster.”
