Orange Grove ISD names 1991 graduate Jared Johnston as athletic director

Orange Grove ISD voted at a special board meeting Tuesday to hire Schertz Clemens head coach Jared Johnston as its next head coach and athletic director, Superintendent Eddie Hesseltine confirmed to the Caller-Times.

Johnston, a 1991 Orange Grove graduate, will take over the Bulldogs after leading the Buffaloes for 12 seasons. He spent two decades with Schetz-Cibolo-Universal City ISD in San Antonio, including as offensive coordinator for Cibolo Steele.

Johnston's record with Clemens was 67-62, including six playoff appearances and a district championship in 2019. His 2015 team reached the regional final at 11-3.

Hesseltine said being an Orange Grove graduate is a plus, as is his success as a Clemens. The district was also impressed with his tenure at SCUCISD.

“He’s been in the same school district for 20 years,” Hesseltine said. “That long experience of being on the team when coach (Mike) Jinks was the offensive coordinator at Steele and then moved to Clemens 12 years ago with great success; he was a great leader and he’s a coach’s coach.”

“He makes people better coaches. His love for children and students and all sports, for our community was important.”

Hesseltine emphasized that Johnston wants all programs, boys and girls, to be successful starting in seventh grade.

Johnston was a multi-sport star for Orange Grove and played college football at Northwestern State.

He replaces Brent Kornegay, who resigned last month to accept the same position at Three Rivers. The Bulldogs had a 7-5 record and qualified for the District 15-4A Division II playoffs last season. The school will move to Class 3A for the next two years.

Hesseltine said Orange Grove will host a community meeting with Johnston inside the school on May 8 at 4 p.m.
