In fact, Holy Cross had been in the FCS playoffs every year since 2019 prior to last season. The Crusaders reached the second round of the playoffs in 2021 and reached the quarterfinals in 2022 with an overall record of 12-1. Holy Cross was 7-4 in 2023.

Chesney was a three-time Patriot League Coach of the Year and led the program to five conference championships.

Prior to Holy Cross, he was the head coach at Division II at Assumption College and Division III at Salve Regina University.
