Why the Real Met Gala 2024 theme was interior design

Best Wallpaper: Demi Moore in Harris Reed

Don't throw away your old wallpaper! Maybe it has a second life as an ultra-chic dress. A case in point is actress Demi Moore, who wore the 60-year-old Fromental wallpaper for couture. The transformation is thanks to British-American designer Harris Reed, who transformed the dead paper into a sculptural dress that resembles a flower that blooms from the waist up (with thorns, of course) and then wilts near the base. “It's 1,100 hours of silk embroidery that we converted into this idea where it blossoms on the carpet,” Reed told model Ashley Graham in an interview Fashion Livestream interview. Moore also wore a stunning new necklace from Cartier, which Reed took into account from the start when designing the dress.

Best Bedding: Maria Sharapova in Prabal Gurung

There are few people in the world who could make a bed sheet look chic on the Met Gala red carpet. Two of these people are tennis star Maria Sharapova and fashion designer Prabal Gurung. In keeping with the Costume Institute's exhibition theme, “Sleeping Beauty: Fashion Resurgent,” Gurung collaborated with Boll & Branch – the house brand known for its super-comfy organic linens, sheets and towels – to create a daffodil yellow dress using 20 yards of Boll & Branch cotton fabric. Branch. Apparently it took more than 300 hours to create the hand-sewn number… a number that also conveniently corresponds to the amount of sleep Met Gala-goers will inevitably need today (ideally in Boll & Branch linens, of course!).

Best Xeriscaping: Tyla in Balmain

The dress code for this year's Met Gala red carpet was “The Garden of Time,” so it was only fitting that Balmain transformed South African singer Tyla into a gorgeous human hourglass or, if you're obsessed with gardening like us, into the world of World's most stylish irrigation-free landscape system. Although your home xeriscape will likely be dotted with cacti, agave, and sage, Tyla's strapless mermaid-style dress was covered in three shades of sand and “microcrystal studs.” Fashion, and was so delicate that it had to be worn to the soirée. This year's theme “captured my imagination,” said Olivier Rousteing, Balmain's creative director Fashion. And if your imagination isn't stimulated to design your very own desert garden, we don't know what will.

Best Pattern: Deborah Roberts in Harlem Toile

Long live Harlem Toile! Interior designer and ELLE DECOR A-List designer Sheila Bridges created the iconic pattern nearly 20 years ago and it remains relevant today. The motif — which reimagines 18th-century French culture and incorporates black characters — has found its way onto plates, candles, robes, speakers and even the Met Gala. ABC News journalist Deborah Roberts wore the print as a dress for the event – a collaboration between Bridges and bridal designer Mark Ingram. “If we're talking about a garden theme, I think this is just perfect,” Roberts said in a video posted to Ingram's Instagram. “Most importantly, it’s a dress that I own – so sustainability is part of the business.”

Best Faux Bois: Taylor Russell in Loewe

Bones and everything Actress Taylor Russell made her Met Gala debut this year – no surprise, she opted for a custom Loewe gown. Russell, a global brand ambassador for the Spanish label, opened Loewe's spring 2023 ready-to-wear show in Paris and continues her partnership with creative director Jonathan Anderson here. The inspiration? “I always wanted to be a tree,” she said jokingly Fashion Livestream interview with model Ashley Graham and actress Gwendoline Christie. But don't be fooled: the molded corset may look like real wood, but it's a trompe l'oeil effect. Loewe used a printing technique to mimic the look of wood grain and marquetry – so Russell could climb the steps of the Met without splinters.

Best Lalique neighbor: Elle Fanning in Balmain

Okay, so actress Elle Fanning's sheer dress wasn't actually made of glass, but it definitely fooled us! The actress wore a custom-made Balmain dress made from organza and layers of resin to create a glass-spun effect. The icing on the cake were the two resin birds on both shoulders, reminiscent of the timeless, graceful sculpture of a traditional glassmaker like Lalique.
