Police release new information after a Lawrence dog attack leads to a shooting

LAWRENCE, Kan. (KCTV) – New information has been revealed after a dog attack in Lawrence left one dog dead and its owner suffering a gunshot wound.

Lawrence, Kansas, police say they have some answers to provide after several questions about the investigation that began after a man shot a dog and its owner earlier this week.

Police said they were called to the 700 block of Ash St. around noon on Monday, May 6, to reports of a shooting after a woman's pit bull mix escaped.

The woman told police that she rescued the dog from a Kansas City animal shelter in 2020. She was letting her dogs out in her backyard when one of them escaped and immediately ran after her.

Meanwhile, LKPD determined that a man and his dog were walking by when the loose dog began attacking them. He shot and killed the dog, but also shot the woman in the thigh. She was taken to a nearby trauma center with non-life-threatening injuries.

On Tuesday, police said the female victim was released from the hospital and continues to recover from her injury.

Detectives said they are in the process of conducting interviews and completing paperwork to discuss the case with the Douglas County District Attorney.
