Man charged with hate crime after shooting gun at gay neighbors: police

A 75-year-old Las Vegas man attacked his gay neighbors with a gun while shouting homophobic slurs, according to court documents.

The local CBS affiliate obtained the legal documents regarding the incident, which occurred on April 25, according to 911 records.

The attorney reported Wednesday that court documents allege the elderly man named Larry Walraven was a “habitual criminal” who was “on patrol” when the alleged assault occurred.

One victim was outside his home when Walraven pointed a “black revolver pistol” at him.

“After aiming the pistol, Walraven fired four shots [the victim] “without any of the bullets making contact,” court documents state. Walraven then attacked the victim with homophobic slurs, shouting: “I'm going to kill you” and “I hope you die.”

According to the legal documents, the weapon was actually an air pistol. The reports do not indicate what crime Walraven was paroled for, but according to a defense attorney's website, convicted felons are not allowed to own guns in the state.

Because of the habitual criminal offense, Walraven must remain in jail awaiting his May 15 preliminary hearing.

Walraven denied any involvement in the incident.

When arrested, Walraven “told officers he had no idea what happened,” the documents cited said. He also claimed that he was “in his house all night taking care of his mother.”

The FBI's 2022 annual crime report found that hate crimes have risen sharply across the country. According to the data, there was a 13.8% increase in reported hate crimes based on sexual orientation and a 32.9% increase in reported hate crimes based on gender identity.
