The surprising viral horror hit Amanda the Adventurer is being released for additional platforms – downloaded digitally

For obvious reasons, I try my best to stay up to date on all things video games. Unfortunately, many indie games still slip through the cracks. Sometimes even viral. Today is the first time I've heard of Amanda the Adventurer. The game looks cute and cheerful, but underneath… well, you'll see. Amanda the Adventurer was released last year for PC and Nintendo Switch, and it was announced that it will also be coming to mobile and other consoles later this year.

This isn't the first time a small indie team has released a surprise hit horror game. Remember Five Nights at Freddy's and Bendy and the Ink Machine? The developer of Amanda the Adventurer is based in Hamilton, Ontario; It started at a game jam as a team of four, but has since expanded to a team of nine. The studio's mission is to transform outlandish and bizarre concepts into fun, addictive and thought-provoking games. She believes there is beauty in the bizarre. So far so good, it seems!

In the game, Riley Park inherits her Aunt Kate's house. Kate lived in seclusion and Riley begins to explore what was left behind. In the attic, Riley finds an old television and a stack of VHS tapes that appear to be episodes of an unknown children's show from the early 2000s.

After the first tape is inserted into the VCR, a little girl named Amanda and her sheep named Wooly appear on the screen. The show seems to be locally made, with charming and simple episodes. At least that's what you'd think… Riley soon realizes that Amanda and Wooly have been communicating through the television. Something in Riley's head screams for them to stop, but they're too compelled to keep watching. Amanda seems to need something. What could that be?

Here is a trailer from the release of Amanda the Adventurer for Nintendo Switch:

Amanda the Adventurer is described as a short, complex single-player horror experience hidden under the guise of a children's cartoon. (Think Dora the Explorer.) The '90s-style CGI transports players to a simpler era of animation. Complete challenging escape room-style puzzles using the clues hidden in the ribbons.

Developed by MANGLEDmaw Games and published by DreadXP, Amanda the Adventurer will be released this year for iOS/Android, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series and Xbox One. It is currently available for PC via Steam and Nintendo Switch.
