Jinkx Monsoon on playing the new Doctor Who villain Maestro

Jinkx Monsoon plays a brand new one Doctor Who Villain named Maestro, a powerful musical villain who wants to wreak havoc in the 1960s and stop the era! The character arrives in “The Devil's Chord”., This is the second episode of the 14th Doctor Who Series that fans can watch on Saturday, May 11, 2024.

Known as the queen of all queens, this American drag queen rose to fame when she won the fifth season of RuPaul's Drag Race in 2013. Then in 2022 she won RuPaul's Drag Race All StarsThis makes her the first two-time winner of the show. She also pursued a career in the music industry, releasing two studio albums and making her Broadway debut in 2023, where she starred as Matron “Mama” Morton Chicago

Now Jinkx Monsoon wears a red wig and a tuxedo cape with piano keys in a thrilling episode in which the Doctor (Ncuti Gatwa) and his companion Ruby Sunday (Millie Gibson) travel back to 1960s London to meet the Beatles, only to … Meet the maestro who wants to change the course of music history! Also look out for Cilla Black attempting to record a song at Abbey Road Studios!

Jinkx Monsoon interview about playing Maestro

How did you land the role of Maestro in “Doctor Who”?
Jinkx Monsoon says: “I’ve been friends with Russell T. Davies for a long time. He was there for so many of my things and was always so supportive. He came to see my show in Manchester, which is a farce.” Afterwards he went home and he realized he wanted me to play this particular role Doctor Who. At that moment he started to write the role a little more with me in mind. When I got the script, the description of the character said: One part Joker, one part Jinkx Monsoon!”

What else can you reveal about Maestro?
“Maestro is exceptionally powerful. If human rules don't apply to you, you can do whatever you want. You don't have to worry about whether your feelings make sense to other people because you don't have to answer them.” And that's really liberating when you're playing a character. The thing I love about a villain is that what they do is justified because they have something bigger planned. What I love about Maestro is that while he's objectively evil, he's not. They’re artists, they have a mission statement and it was really nice to play that.”

What did you enjoy most about the role?
“Maestro treats the Doctor like he's not a threat and is really fun to work with. When someone tries to take you down but doesn't actually scare you, that's so much fun. That created a dynamic.” The performance between Ncuti and I is fascinated by the doctor who hates you and tries to put you down when you just find him adorable. This is really revealing of the character of the villain!”

How did you find working on Doctor Who?
“I loved it! Everyone I interacted with, from day one until I left, was absolutely lovely. Everyone was happy to be there and enjoyed their work. Nothing is worse than when you get to your dream job and everyone else.” Otherwise seems apathetic. It really felt like we were all doing something we really cared about and that made for a really nice environment on set and no one cared that this was only my third live-action TV script. Appear!”

You joined Doctor Who during the pandemic. What do you love about it?
“It has that camp element and that sci-fi suspension of disbelief where it's stylized and fun and funny. But it's also so well written. Every episode can move you. Every story has a purpose and is trying to teach you something, whether small or big. I’m really excited to be a part of this episode in a season that will truly shake the foundation of the Whoniverse!”

Could you describe your experience on Doctor Who in five words?
“Dream job of my life.”

* Doctor Who Season 14 premieres on BBCiPlayer in the UK and worldwide on Disney Plus on Saturday 11 May 2024. From this point on, the first two episodes will be shown, followed by a weekly release. Doctor Who series 14 also starts in the UK on BBC1 from Saturday 11 May 2024 at 6:20pm, with The Devil's Chord starting at 7:05pm.
