GBI Announces 2001 Athens Arrest. Death

Authorities in Georgia and Athens announced Thursday that they have made an arrest in a two-decade-old cold case involving the death of a University of Georgia law student.

According to a news release from the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, authorities arrested 48-year-old Edrick Lamont Faust of Athens in connection with the 2001 murder of Tara Louise Baker, who was a 23-year-old first-year law student at the time of her death.

Faust is charged with two counts of aggravated murder, one count of aggravated assault, concealing the death of another, arson, possession of a knife during the commission of a felony, tampering with evidence and one count of aggravated sodomy in connection with Baker's death.

“Tara Louise Baker was a hard-working student with a bright future ahead of her,” GBI Director Chris Hosey said in the release. “Tara’s life was stolen from her in a horrific act of violence. Although this arrest does not bring her back to us, I pray that it will help the Baker family find closure in their healing journey.”

Athens-Clarke County firefighters found Baker after she responded to a fire at her Athens apartment on Jan. 19, 2001. The fire was intentionally set, the press release states.

The GBI Cold Case Unit teamed up with Athens-Clarke County police in September to conduct an in-depth investigation into Baker's death, authorities said. They also worked with the FBI and the Georgia State Patrol.

“This is a case that has stayed with me throughout my career with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department,” said Police Chief Jerry Saulters. “I remember being there during that terrible time. Now, when I see this case come full circle, I appreciate the hard work of the detectives then and now.
