New Coaches Coming to Hampton Football | Richmond Free Press

The coaching carousel continues at Hampton University. Trent Boykin was named HU's interim head football coach, replacing Robert Prunty.

Boykin served as the Pirates' running backs and special teams coach under Coach Prunty since 2020.

He was previously the head coach at Lane College, Tennessee, and an assistant at Akron, Boston College, Ball State and his alma mater, Youngstown State.

A Youngstown football standout, Coach Boykin caught 150 passes for 1,950 yards as a wide receiver.

Coach Prunty, with HU since 2018, finished his last two seasons in the Coastal Athletic Association with a record of 26-29, including 4-7 and 5-6.

HU Football opens at home against Morgan State on August 31st.

Then the Pirates will host Virginia Union on September 7th and travel to Norfolk State on September 14th.

Additional in-state games are Sept. 23 at William & Mary and Nov. 16 at Richmond.

This was the second coaching change at HU recently. In March, veteran Ed “Buck” Joyner was replaced as head basketball coach by Ivan Thomas.

Coach Joyner's record since 2009 was 222-257 overall and 132-117 in conference play, including MEAC, Big South and CAA. The Pirates had a record of 8-24 and 9-24 in the last two seasons under Coach Joyner.
