Secondary school

On high school softball Saturday…
• Houghton won its doubleheader against Marquette 5-1, 9-4. Estella Soumis scored six goals to secure victory in the opening game. Fayah Zapolnik had two hits and two RBI. Romi Mattson scored five goals and secured the win in the nightcap. Soumis had two hits and three RBI.

Today in softball…
• Houghton hosts Iron Mountain.
• Hancock plays at Calumet in the Copper Ball doubleheader. Coverage of both games begins at 3:45 p.m. on the Voice of the Copper Kings, KBear 102.3.
• L'Anse plays at Lake Linden-Hubbell.

On today's baseball schedule…

NHL

Yesterday in the NHL playoffs…
• The Stars defeated the Golden Knights 2-1. Dallas wins this opening round 4-3.
• The Rangers defeated the Hurricanes 4-3. New York takes a 1-0 lead in the second set.

Tonight…
• The Knicks host the Pacers in the opening game of their Eastern Conference semifinal series.

MLB

The Tigers lost 5-2 to the Yankees yesterday, a game that was suspended in the eighth inning due to rain. Tarik Skubal allowed a few early runs, then raced through the sixth, striking out a career-best 12 batters. Detroit tied the game in the bottom of the seventh, with the help of a brace from Spencer Torkelson. In the bottom of the seventh, New York loaded the bases against Shelby Miller. Andrew Chafin relieved him and gave Juan Soto a bases-clearing double.

The Tigers have lost three in a row and visit the Guardians tonight. Jack Flaherty will face Triston McKenzie. Coverage begins at 5:45 p.m. on 99.3 The Lift.

The Brewers only managed five goals in yesterday's 5-0 loss to the Cubs. Freddy Peralta pitched four shutout innings but left the game after giving up three runs in the fifth inning. He suffered his first defeat of the season.

The Brewers visit the Royals tonight. Bryse Wilson will pitch against Cole Ragans.

Youth football

Registration for the first session of summer youth recreational soccer closes tomorrow. Summer soccer is jointly managed by Houghton FC and the Copper Country Soccer Association. Click here to register your children for the seven week session for U5 to U12 or U13 to U18.
