Latest rumors before the official release

The insatiable appetite for the NFL causes everything in the league to adopt an event mentality, including the release of the schedule.

Fans are eagerly awaiting leaks and wondering who their team will play as they hope to get a glimpse of what the upcoming season could look like.

Luckily, insiders, columnists and sports directors from local television stations reported on it.

Ahead of Wednesday's official schedule release, here are two rumors about some of the most intriguing games of the season.

New quarterbacks, new teams struggling in week one

We won't have to wait long to find out what Russell Wilson and Kirk Cousins look like in their new threads when the Pittsburgh Steelers travel to Atlanta to battle the Falcons in week one, according to Zach Klein, sports director for WSB- Channel 2 in Atlanta.

Both Cousins and Wilson were among the most prominent free agent additions this offseason, but neither prominent signal-caller is looking over their shoulder without competition.

After acquiring Wilson, the Steelers traded for Justin Fields from the Chicago Bears. The Falcons surprised Cousins and the entire football world by signing Michael Penix Jr.

Cousins will likely have a longer leash as Penix learns the NFL game and the Falcons system, but the intrigue and drama surrounding both situations make the season opener between Atlanta and Pittsburgh one of the games to watch is a must-see on the first Sunday of the season without knowing exactly what the rest of the list has to offer.

A Super Bowl matchup in Week 7

Patrick Mahomes led the Kansas City Chiefs from behind by 10 to defeat the San Francisco 49ers in overtime in Super Bowl LVIII.

Eight months after the epic game that saw the Chiefs win their second straight World Championship, third overall and second against the 49ers, the two teams will meet on Sunday, October 20th.

Jordan Schultz reported that the highly anticipated rematch will take place at 4:25 p.m. on Fox.

There's a lot of emphasis on the offenses involved, including Mahomes and Niners quarterback Brock Purdy, but the difference could be in the teams' defensive performances.

San Francisco said goodbye to Arik Armstead, Randy Gregory, Javon Kinlaw, Sebastian Joseph-Day and Chase Young this offseason, while the Chiefs traded their best cover corner, L'Jarius Snead, to the Tennessee Titans.

The unit that can best hold its own against the high-powered, full-court offense will likely determine the outcome of this game, which could be played again next February in New Orleans.
