University Park Mall is expected to increase security after the shooting

MISHAWAKA — University Park Mall will increase security out of an abundance of caution, a news release said Monday, following an indoor shooting on May 11.

“We are committed to maintaining a strong security program that includes numerous measures and also works closely with local law enforcement,” a spokesperson said in the release.

On May 11, around 6:19 p.m., police responded to multiple 911 calls reporting shots fired at the mall. At this point, she had not identified a victim or suspect.

An arrest was made on May 13 when Mishawaka police responded to St. Joseph Regional Medical Center about a 16-year-old who had suffered a gunshot wound to the foot. The 16-year-old is facing charges of dangerous possession of a weapon and unlawful carrying of a firearm by a juvenile by the St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office.

A spokesperson for the mall said in the news release that it takes seriously its responsibility to ensure a “safe and comfortable environment for our shoppers, employees and retailers.” Mall officials did not respond when asked by The Tribune how long the security measures would last and where they would take place.

This incident is being investigated by the Mishawaka Police Major Crimes Unit.
