Could Georgia football be the biggest story in college football?

Could the Georgia Bulldogs be the best story for the 2024 college football season?

The consensus is that the Georgia Bulldogs are one of the favorites to win the national title this season. Not only do they have the best coach in college football right now, but they also bring back key pieces from last year's team and have made some solid additions through the transfer portal. Georgia will certainly be one of the headliners this year, but could they be the best story in the sport?

ESPN recently published an article listing some of the best stories for the upcoming college football season, and the Bulldogs were on the list. Winning a third national title in the last four would be a remarkable achievement, and other factors could make for an exciting story this season.

First of all, the fact that Carson Beck is the starting quarterback brings some notoriety. Not only does the returning starter have the potential to put together a Heisman-caliber season, but he could also be the first name taken off the roster for next year's NFL Draft. But perhaps the bigger part of the story would be how Beck got to this point in his career. Not many quarterbacks in this era of the game wait their turn and sit on the bench for multiple seasons or even just one season, but Beck did. A season in which a player like Beck takes home the national title might turn the story around a bit or at least spark a new discussion surrounding the transfer portal.

Now let’s bring in head coach Kirby Smart. Nick Saban is now retired and no longer in the picture, which put Smart on the podium. Georgia's ball coach is considered the best in the business without Saban, and if Smart were to win a national title in the first season Saban is gone, many would likely consider Georgia the newest and greatest dynasty in the sport.

The NFL Draft was one of the most recent events in the football world, and Georgia lost a number of players to the professional football league – most notably tight end Brock Bowers, wide receiver Ladd McConkey and offensive tackle Amarius Mims. If the Bulldogs can win the title by deploying a strong offense after losing their top two pass catchers, it would be headline-worthy. Plus, 2024 could finally be the year the Bulldogs take home the Joe Moore Award, and that after losing a player like Mims only makes the storyline all the sweeter.

Speaking of offensive, while this part of the story may not resonate with national audiences, it should definitely resonate with Georgia fans. Offensive coordinator Mike Bobo helping the Dawgs take home a national title would be one for the books. Bobo's return as a play caller was not unanimously welcomed by the fan base, and some fans still don't have much grace to offer Bobo. But as they learned during Stetson Bennett's time at Georgia, a ring can solve a lot of problems.

The final and perhaps most important part of the story is Georgia's schedule. If the Bulldogs overcome the challenge of traveling to Alabama, Ole Miss and Texas this season en route to a national title in the first year of the expanded College Football Playoff, then they deserve all the glory in the world. Coach Smart understands how tough the schedule will be for his program this year, and in order to win a title they will have to maneuver through the toughest college football schedule yet.

The 2024 college football season will bring many changes with the expanded College Football Playoff, and Georgia winning the 12-team format would be icing on the cake. But it will also bring some new challenges to the field. It's shaping up to be a college football season that fans will never forget, and Georgia could very well become a team that many of them will never forget either.
