“Bob Marley: One Love” nominated for Best Picture at the 2024 BET Awards

The musical biopic from Paramount Pictures and Tuff Gong Bob Marley: One Love was nominated for Best Film at the 2024 BET Awards.

The other nominees in the category are American fiction, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, The Book of Clarence, The colour purple, The equalizer 3 And The little mermaid.

The film, directed by Reinaldo Marcus Green and starring Kingsley Ben-Adir as Marley, Lashana Lynch as his wife Rita Marley, James Norton as Island Records founder Chris Blackwell and several Jamaican artists, is now the fifth highest-grossing music biopic in the United States, according to Billboard. The Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) is currently #1, followed by the NWA biopic Straight from Compton (2015), Elvis (2022) and the Johnny Cash biopic Walk along the Line (2015).

According to IMDB's BoxOfficeMojo, May 2024 grosses were $96.8 million in the US and $177.1 million internationally.

According to Rotten Tomatoes, a film and television review aggregation site, Bob Marley: One Love currently has 92% approval from audiences, more than film critics who have it at 44%.

Critics agree that “Kingsley Ben-Adir does an admirable job in the central role, but Bob Marley: One Love is ultimately a standard biopic that fails to do justice to its brilliant subject.” The Guardian, for example, criticized the Marley family-approved project for ignoring some important questions about the musician. The newspaper noted that the film seemed “unrelaxed and sanctified,” noting that “biopics can't be more authoritative or anesthetized than this slow, solemn account of reggae legend Bob Marley.”

Dubbing itself “Culture's Biggest Night,” the BET Awards were created in 2001 to recognize Black entertainers and other minorities in music, film, sports and philanthropy.

The 2024 production, themed “Standing on Culture,” will air live from Los Angeles on BET on Sunday, June 30 at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
