The biggest street style trends from Australian Fashion Week

Australian Fashion Week has become one of the biggest events in the fashion calendar in recent years. As a result, the event – and its home in Carriageworsk – has become something of a breeding ground for spectacular street style, with fashion enthusiasts from across the country flocking to Sydney to watch the catwalks and put together enviable ensembles for the occasion. And this year was no exception.

Of course, ELLE was on hand for the week-long extravaganza to scope out the style palette and keep an eye on the trends that will dominate our wardrobes next season.

Below you'll find our pick of the biggest and best styles from AFW 2024 – and how we'll be wearing them.

Layers upon layers

Layering for winter isn't exactly groundbreaking, but this year's take on the trend had a distinctly maximalist edge. Think: skirts over jeans, dresses over sweaters, and skirts over (more) skirts. In other words, more is more when it comes to layering in 2024.

Hosiery proved to be the easiest way to spice up an outfit from the fashion world, as showgoers dressed their legs in tights of almost every color, pattern and texture. Importantly, these are not the boring black stockings of our school uniform era. Hosiery spotted at Carriageworks included red, white and laec varieties as well as stockings.

Ties were an unexpected favorite among fairgoers this season. Some leaned fully into the business vibe of it all, pairing their backs with traditional shirts and oversized blazers, while others subverted expectations and balanced the more masculine elements with miniskirts and short shorts.

Red reigns supreme

Our obsession with red isn't new, but according to Australian Fashion Week, it's not going away any time soon. Red was the hue of the moment this week, and some decided to join in on the trend – from a red sock peeking out from under their pants to a subtle red ribbon in their hair – while others leaned in in full glory decided to dress in the color from head to toe.
