Organic textures and materiality

“Natural finishes like rattan, jute and other weaves aren’t new, but they’re not going anywhere,” Heather Goerzen, design director at Havenly explains. “Organic textures continue to reign supreme for summer 2024, largely thanks to their relaxed, vibrant look that pairs effortlessly with other furnishings and styles, whether they be classic influences or a more modern twist.”

Audrey Scheck of Audrey Scheck Designs is familiar with these materials and often uses them in her designs. “Rattan, wicker and cane furniture add warmth and texture to rooms while creating an airy atmosphere,” she shares.

We love natural finishes and organic materials, so this is a trend we can totally support. Norrise recommends you look out for macrame and crochet this season too. “The incorporation of these handmade textiles reflects a desire to add character and a sense of calm to our spaces, adding warmth, texture and an artisanal touch to any space,” she says.

“This year we are noticing a clear trend that will emerge before summer 2024: pattern spots,” explains Goerzen. “While patterns in general have made a slow but steady comeback in recent years – thanks in part to the increasing popularity of traditional design – we expect it to peak this summer and continue through the rest of 2024 .” ”

Whether you prefer stripes, polka dots, or exotic animal prints, this summer is a great time to add your personality to your space with some playful patterns you might not have thought of in recent years.

“Thanks to the design world’s collective love of all things mid-century modern and Scandinavian minimalism, patterns rarely went beyond the realm of subtle stripes or geometric motifs,” explains Goerzen. “But now it looks like we're going all out – vintage-inspired florals and bold animal prints that we wouldn't even have taken into account about five years ago are slowly becoming more mainstream. Scheck agrees. “We are particularly fascinated by block prints and botanical motifs, which give any room a playful yet subtle flair,” she says.

When everything blooms in spring, summer is a time of continued abundance. The trees are lush and green, the summer produce is bursting with color and flavor, and weaving some of that magic into your space is perfect for the season. ““Bringing nature indoors and using lots of greens, terracottas and browns, as well as nature-inspired colors and patterns, is definitely trending now,” says Jill Steinberg, co-founder and chief operations officer of Fine & Dandy Co.. “We are also seeing a lot of murals with plant and landscape motifs being incorporated into homes.”

“Nature is forever and always in fashion,” adds Goerzen. In addition to nature-inspired patterns and colors, don't be afraid to incorporate houseplants into your home if they don't already exist. Nothing enlivens a room more than a plant.

Fearless color palettes will take center stage throughout 2024, and this interior design trend will continue into summer too. “Heading into summer 2024, we see a continued move away from purely neutral decoration,” says Goerzen. “It’s about combining color, personality and drama with more saturated spaces – especially in upholstery and color.”

Don't know where to start? “Think tried-and-true shades of blue, rich and sexy greens, seductive tones of marigold and amber, and of course the classic shade of red that dominates the fashion and design scene alike,” suggests Goerzen. “It is a season of expression in all its shades.”
