2024 Preakness Stakes winners, payouts, results: Seize The Gray wins at Pimlico, Mystik Dan finishes second, ending Triple Crown bid

Seize The Gray is the winner of the 149th Preakness Stakes. Favorite and Kentucky Derby winner Mystik Dan finished second, ending his chance at a first Triple Crown since Justify in 2018. It's trainer D. Wayne Lucas' seventh Preakness Stakes win and 15th overall in Triple Crown races. He last visited the Winner's Circle in Pimlico with Oxbow in 2013.

Mystik Dan failed to close the distance in the final furlongs and ended up finishing second. In doing so, he ended his attempt to win his first Triple Crown since Justify and what would have been only his third since 1978.

The Justify and the other current Triple Crown winner, American Pharaoh in 2015, were both trained by Bob Baffert, whose horse Imagination finished seventh.

  • Bob Baffert back in the Preakness Stakes

FILE - Trainer Bob Baffert stands for a photo before the Breeders' Cup horse races at Santa Anita in Arcadia, Calif., Oct. 27, 2023. Preakness favorite Muth was ruled out of the return leg of the Triple Crown after suffering a bout of fever . The Maryland Jockey Club announced Muth's change in status on the morning of Wednesday, May 15, 2024, approximately 12 hours after the horse arrived at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore. Legendary trainer Bob Baffert has been persona non grata in the Kentucky Derby in recent years, having been suspended after his 2021 Derby winner Medina Spirit failed a post-race drug test. That three-year suspension expires after this season, so he will likely be back at Churchill Downs next year, but the suspension from that incident in both the Preakness and Belmont has been lifted and he has a horse, Imagination, in Preakness 149. He trained favorite Muth, who was scratched earlier in the week.

  • Rainy weather in the forecast for Preakness 149

Temperatures will be in the high 60s this afternoon under cloudy skies and the chance of rain will be 80 percent throughout the afternoon. The track is already muddy just after 3:00 p.m. ET, but the rain has taken a break and more is expected before Race 13, the Preakness Stakes, begins with a lag time of 6:50 p.m. ET.
