This has been the most entertaining season of the Women's Super League yet, but who were the key players? Here is Telegraph Sport's assembled team for 2023/24:

Goalkeeper: Khiara Keating, Man City

There were raised eyebrows when Gareth Taylor decided to give Keating the number 1 shirt at Manchester City earlier this season, ahead of two far more experienced goalkeepers, but the young player has excelled. She won the Golden Glove for most goals against and was an important part of the league's best defense. And she's still only 19 years old.

Right-Back: Ashley Lawrence, Chelsea

Champions Chelsea bagged a bargain last summer by signing Ashley Lawrence on a free transfer from Paris St-Germain. She can play at full-back on both sides of the pitch and has performed consistently every week, with great positioning, great anticipation and a calm presence against tricky wingers. A huge boost to Chelsea's flexibility and versatility in defence.

Right central defender: Laia Aleixandri, Man City

Aleixandri is a rare defender: technically brilliant on the ball, with great passing vision and balance, but she combines these qualities with fierce, hard tackling. Her brave defense as a centre-back this season has helped take City to new levels.

Left central defender: Alex Greenwood, Man City

The first name in this back four. Greenwood remains one of the best left-footed footballers in the world and has been England's most consistent player over the last two years. She is an integral part of City's style of play, building up the defense and has formed a wonderful partnership with Aleixandri.

Left-back: Niamh Charles, Chelsea

Charles' long-term transition from winger to top full-back is complete. This was by far her best season. She made a significant contribution to Chelsea on both offense and defense and also took on a more senior role in the team, informally becoming something of a leader within that group.

Central midfielder: Grace Clinton, Tottenham

Clinton, on loan from Manchester United, has had a wonderful influence at Tottenham, bringing creativity, flair, vision and real drive to the midfield. She can do everything in the middle of the park: win the ball, press hard, adapt tactically. Tottenham missed out badly in the Women's FA Cup final at Wembley when they were drawn in the cup.

Holding midfielder: Yui Hasegawa, Man City

Japan's Hasegawa is a joy to watch. She seems to have a lot more time on the ball in difficult, tight spaces and always seems to be two or three passes ahead of everyone else. A very intelligent footballer who was so effective for City. There are many good defensive midfielders in the league, but she has proven to be by far the best.

Central midfielder: Erin Cuthbert, Chelsea

Great for Chelsea again and a real leader. In games where the score is close or where Chelsea are struggling, Cuthbert is often the one to speed things up and lead to victory. Her work rate is incredible and her progress at Chelsea is one of the club's great success stories.

Striker: Lauren James, Chelsea

When James is at her best, she is one of the most entertaining players in the world, arguably the most exciting young striker in the world. Although she doesn't always play centrally through the middle, her goal scoring rate this season has still been excellent, whether from the touchline or from deeper positions. She inspires people and is a remarkable talent.

Central Striker: Bunny Shaw, Man City

An outstanding goalscorer. Shaw has great power and strength, but also great feet – and her most valuable skill is being in the right place at the right time. She walked away with the Golden Boot this season, scoring more than a goal per game and playing in the last three games of the season because she was injured.

Striker: Lauren Hemp, Man City

Of all the left wingers in this league, Hemp can beat his opponent more easily than anyone else. She loves competing with others and that excites the audience. She has added more goals to her game this year but is also on the comeback and works very hard when she is not playing the ball. Now that she has signed a new contract, City can continue to build the team around key players like her.
