Singapore-based Mustafa Group reports massive data leak; police investigation into | World News

Singapore's data protection authority is investigating a massive data leak at the Mustafa group of companies, which operates a shopping center in Little India, among other things, according to a media report on Thursday.

A cyber attacker on the popular hacker forum BreachForums claimed to have stolen the Personal Information from Mustafa customers and employees.

“The forum has been closed in recent weeks,” The Straits Times reported about the data leak reported on April 25.

The hacker, who previously claimed to have stolen data from a global database used by companies to identify potential criminals, claimed to have stolen 180GB of data belonging to the Mustafa Group.

The files uploaded to the forum allegedly contained data such as full names, identity card numbers and home addresses, according to the Singapore daily, which also said the files have since been removed.

The Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) told the newspaper that it was investigating the Mustafa incident and had asked the group for more information.
Meanwhile, a Mustafa spokesman said the company had hired external cybersecurity experts and an auditor and had begun a “thorough review” of its IT systems.

Ethical-empire.com, a website dedicated to this topic Internet securitysaid: “A threat actor known as 'GHOSTR' breached a staggering 180.3GB of sensitive databases between March 20 and March 31 due to the company's poorly secured server network.” This breach not only impacted Mustafa's retail and financial arms; also its other ventures, including restaurants, travel services and visa applications.”
