Chris Pratt voices the lasagna-loving lazy cat Garfield in his new animated film

NEW YORK (WABC) — From comic strips to television screens, Garfield has been a staple of pop culture for decades.

Now everyone's favorite lasagna-loving cat is getting the Hollywood treatment, with Chris Pratt lending his voice to the iconic role.

Pratt is no stranger to taking on larger-than-life roles, and he does it again, stepping into the paws of one of the most iconic Monday-hating cartoon cats of all time.

The film is full of action, laughs and some father-son drama.

From sitcoms to dinosaur hunts to his role as the Guardian of the Galaxy, Pratt has spent nearly 15 years in front of the camera.

And now he's taking on another, larger-than-life role: Garfield!

Make room, Tom Cruise, Pratt and Garfield are giving off “Mission Impossible” vibes.

“Thanks. It feels like that. Yes. It's a hilarious heist movie where the spoiled house cat is taken out of his comfort zone and on an epic outdoor adventure involving train fighting, train hopping and the whole world-” “It feels very active. And yes, the movie itself has a touch of 'Top Gun' about it.”

This film shows the world from Garfield's perspective. So, what perspective would Pratt want to see the world from if he had the chance?

“Oh my God, my children. I would like to see my children. I just want to know what they see and feel throughout the day,” he said.

The fact that he was involved in this film gives him a certain “street credibility” as a father.

“I would say that's part of it. But the credibility I get, more than anything, is that I get to be home because animated films are voiceover films,” Pratt said. “And that's one of the things I really love about animated films, is that I get to put my kids to bed at night.”

Pratt said his relationship with Garfield depends on what season of his life he's thinking about.

“I probably had moments between 27 and 35 where I ate absolutely anything I wanted and laid around on the couch a lot. So there was that Garfield phase, but now I'm a little older. I don't eat as much as I want, but I feel kind of spoiled and distant, I mean the hair, the makeup, the under-eye ice and the moisturizers I put on. In all those things that I had to indulge in growing up, that's very, very Garfield,” he said.

“Garfield” is poised to take over the summer box office. The film hits theaters on Friday.
