Kelly Rowland explains viral confrontation with security on the red carpet in Cannes

Kelly Rowland speaks out after a heated exchange with security on the red carpet at the Cannes Film Festival on May 21.

After recordings of the Destiny's Child alumnus sternly interacting with a security guard on the Marcello Mio The incident caused a stir on the Internet, she said in an interview with Associated Press at the amfAR gala in Cannes on May 23, France.

“The woman knows what happened. I know what happened,” Rowland, 43, told the outlet. “I have boundaries, and I stand by those boundaries, and that's all.”

“And there were other women on the carpet who didn't look quite like me, and they weren't insulted or pushed down or told to get off,” she added. “I stood my ground, and she felt like she had to make her point, but I stood my ground.”

The incident occurred on the steps of the Palais des Festivals, where Rowland and the security guard got into an argument. Several people accompanying the “Dilemma” singer appeared to intervene, but the security guard let them continue walking down the carpet.

Earlier this year, Rowland starred in her own film – Tyler Perry’s Mea CulpaWhen the film was released on Netflix in February, she told PEOPLE that starring in the erotic legal thriller was “quite an experience.”

“I remember being very nervous when I read the script, and I remember thinking about everything that an erotic thriller has to offer, and that was very intimidating for me,” she said at the time. “And then a friend called me and said, 'You know, Kel, if it doesn't scare you, what's the point of doing it?'”

“And so I literally ran there. I figured everything out. Tyler was so incredible and instrumental in this whole process and [my costar] Trevante [Rhodes] was just a pleasure to work with him. I was very blessed,” Rowland added.
